if you visited this year’s salone del mobile you may already have seen maison martin margiela’s installation the maison in a room at galleria carla sozzani [on until may 30]. the room is inspired by the iconographic use of black + white for the interior of its paris headquarters. this colour scheme has been captured in trompe-l’œil walls depicting a lavish 18th century parisian apartment.

actual paintings adorn the walls yet hide lockers with jewellery and a collection of sunglasses are displayed on surrealistic cabinets. this installation showcases all of maison martin margiela’s non-fashion product lines. location: corso como 10 [porta garibaldi].

opening today [6.30pm] at galleria carla sozzani is cine opera, a video + photo exhibition by brit composer michael nyman. curated by fashion icon diane pernet, the show is a visual collection of daily scenes captured by nyman and made with a keen eye to reality during his many journeys across the planet. the video project, defined by himself as cine opera, is accompanied by music and sound that forces us to think about life in modern society. location: corso como 10 [porta garibaldi].

during the salone del mobile on apr 14-18 the giuliano fujiwara flagship store hosts an exhibition dedicated to renowned japanese artist + designer shun kawakami. on display are six off-white shirts from the brand’s menswear collection. on each the artist has printed graphic patterns that seem to have been made by pouring black ink directly on the cotton fabric. letters, numbers and stylized tree branches, reminiscent of the japanese painting tradition, intertwine and fade into each other. mind you, the shirts will also be exclusively on sale here. location: via borgospesso 11 [duomo].

the splendour of contemporary design unfolds again at the annual salone del mobile in milan, drawing thousands of design aficionados from across the planet to its exhibitions and presentations. following last year’s craft punk showcase, design miami continues its collab with fendi and presents design vertigo on apr 14-18 at the luxury brand’s spazio fendi. the exhibition consists of a series of site-specific installations that invite the public to look at design from a vanguard perspective.

the show is conceived as an interactive event that transforms the venue into a transgressive design theatre, featuring work by artist felice varini, along with new work by three emerging studios practicing between the boundaries of traditional design disciplines: random international, beta tank and graham hudson. together these projects reflect the extreme variety that characterizes design production today. location: via sciesa 3 [porta vittoria].

celebrating this year’s edition of the salone del mobile on apr 14-18, fashion brand stone island teams up with furniture manufacturer zanotta. presented are seven objects created by aldo petillo + andrea dichiara who creatively fused of the latter’s celebrated zanotta’s sacco chair [1968] and a series of stone island’s signature jacket designs. the designs on display should provoke viewers to engage in a different kind of design perception. location: stone island showroom, via savona 54 [zona tortona].

stella mccartney recently opened a flagship in milan’s prestigious triangolo d’oro, the luxury boutique-infested shopping area near the duomo. housed in a courtyard palazzo, the new store occupies two floors covering an area of 175 sqm. and is designed by angus pond architects in london. the design concept is based on a lack of weight as almost everything is suspended, allowing the space to dominate over furniture.

of a series of bespoke items, the semi-ornamental wall pieces made from brass are true eye-catchers, giving the space a playful elegance and firmly marking it as an exclusive female retail environment. the milan flagship features all stella mccartney collections. location: via santo spirito 3 [duomo].

an interesting exhibition launched last week at milan’s museo della scienza e della tecnologia leonardo da vinci. curated by beatrice leanza and dubbed emporium - a new common sense of space, the show features works and installations by 27 artists from japan, korea and china [on until dec 8]. all works have an intrinsic connection with the spatial and social conventions of their original contexts, and intend to provide an understanding of the way younger generations in the far east formulate new ways to deal with the space of art and social action. participating artists include megumi matsubara, ahn doojin and xijing men. location: via san vittore 21 [porta magenta].

photographer carlotta manaigo show land of a thousand dances, horses, horses, horses, horses opens at le stanze di dimore on thu - oct 29 [6.30pm]. on display will be a series of new works in black + white by the new york-based artist. location: via solferino 11 [brera].

leisurewear brand closed opened a new store inside the recently renovated premises of multi-brand fashion store clan. the new store measures 50 sqm. and offers both the brand’s menswear and womenswear collections. closed’s new strategy to launch the new shop concept next to its own 15 stores has been inspired by the current economic climate. location: via pontaccio 15 [brera].

after previous store launches in the u.s., macau and hong kong in 2008, and in london last month, m missoni’s first italian flagship officially opened its doors in milan. measuring approx. 100 sqm., the new store exclusively features the less expensive womenswear line of the high-end missoni brand. the store is fitted out in minimalist style and has an easy-on-the-eye earth colour scheme. location: corso venezia 2 [duomo].

brace yourself for a fashion explosion next september when 13 of vogue magazine’s international editions launch fashion’s night out. it’s an initiative to promote retail, restore consumer confidence and, last but not least, celebrate fashion in pretty much all of the planet’s fashion capitals, from new york to taipei and from paris to mumbai. there’ll be various events with local designers, department stores, high-street chains and boutiques. so check your local vogue edition the next few months!
