artist olafur eliasson teamed up with architect ma yansong for the site-specific exhibition feeling are facts at the ullens center for contemporary art [on until jun 20]. the collab installation intends to push the line between art and architecture to new limits and consists of a space in which the artists fuse light, color, water and temperature into a fascinating experiential event. location: 4 jiuxianqiao lu [dashanzi 798].

painter + filmmaker sarah morris‘ solo exhibition it’s all true opened earlier this week at galerie meyer kainer [on until apr 30]. known for her complex abstractions, a series of new paintings are put on display.

additionally the show includes the screening of her new film beijing, shot during the 2008 olympics. the film observes the perplexing and contradictory economy and politics of china, and explores the spectacle of the opening of the olympic games. location: eschenbachgasse 9 [innere stadt].

beijing’s the opposite house is a bastion of cool contemporary design. the luxury boutique hotel is located in the village at sanlitun, an upscale development project in the city’s chaoyang district. the property boasts 98 spacious studios and a lavish two-storey penthouse, all featuring striking open designs in which modern comfort fuses effortlessly with clean design.

it’s the final week of just around the corner [on until mid-january 2010], the first group exhibition at quirky independent art space arrow factory. the show looks at the street and hutong environment as a site for artistic creation and invited participating artists to make new projects that interact, engage, embed themselves or otherwise respond to social conditions that persist within arrow factory’s storefront venue. location: 38 jianchang hutong [dongcheng].

opening party of the 30 degrees group exhibition at red gate gallery is sat - nov 14 [3pm-5pm]. on display is a selection of multimedia works by 30 chinese and china-based artists which represent their interpretation of the country’s metamorphosis over the last three decades. participating artists include chen hang feng, zhang liyu and zane mellupe. location: dongbianmen watchtower [chong wen].

launching wed - oct 28 at powerhouse arena is sound kapital, an exciting and investigative exhibition of beijing’s buoyant underground music scene through an elaborate series of photos by matthew niederhauser. mind you, the official opening + launch party of an eponymous publication by powerhouse books is held on thu - nov 5 [7pm-10pm], featuring gigs by chinese rock bands xiao he, carsick cars and p.k.14. location: 37 main street [d.u.m.b.o.].

the massive icograda world design congress is held at beijing’s magnificent national center for performing arts. themed 信 or xin [message], the event will explore contemporary issues and challenges currently facing communication design, a rather interesting perspective in an authoritarian country like the people’s republic of china to say the least. a slew of lectures, exhibitions, workshops and other events are organized for thousands of visitors from both china and across the planet. click [here] to view the full program. location: 2 xi chang an jie [xicheng].

check out the greenpix, a zero energy media wall using sustainable digital media. developed by simone giostra + partners and arup, the very first wall was installed at the xicui entertainment complex. the greenpix wall is a large-scale display comprising of 2,292 color led light points comparable to a 24,000 sq. ft. monitor screen for dynamic content display. location: xicui lu [haidian].

saving culture buffs in shanghai and beijing from the dreary winter grey, the jue festival, of music and arts adds some colour from january 7-17. plenty of excuses to get outdoors here including french electro-clash outfit enfant terrible and dancehall legends south rakkas crew. the art program includes chen hang feng’s look at consumer logos at art labor gallery in shanghai.

believe it or not but christian dior’s haute-couture frocks seem to have influenced a whole bunch of chinese artists. so much so there’s an exhibition dedicated to it at the ullens center for contemporary art [on until jan 15]. location: main hall, 4 jiu xian qian lu [chaoyang].
