red wing shoes lands in amsterdam, setting up shop in a cutesy canal district abode. launched by the boys behind denim depository tenue de nîmes, the store is pretty much an extrapolation of their brand philosophy, if not a downright brand expansion of sorts. compatible with the legacy of red wing shoes, the store interior has a rugged ‘americana’ vintage look where a lot of effort has gone into detailing, and creating the right balance with the more contemporary design elements.
walls are adorned by early 20th-century tools and shoes are displayed on steel and antique glass cabinets filled with black coal. the shop features a selection of red wing shoes‘ collection for men and women, complemented by belts, gloves and other accessories. additionally, there’s a striking collection of sturdy canvas bags that’s hard to pass by without purchasing one. location: reestraat 15hs [centrum].

spurred on by the ephemeral, fashion media have seen consumers shift gradually to online sources to get their daily fashion fix. with her new publication fashion blogs, journalist kirstin hanssen digs deep into the world of…yes indeed, fashion bloggers. co-conceptualized with felicia nitzsche and the aid of writer elina tozzi, the book is divided into the categories fashion journalism, street style photography, party photography, personal style blogs and men’s style, and features interviews with leading bloggers from across the planet.

russian architect + filmmaker oxana malevanik shot a documentary of her native town of vladivostok on russia’s pacific rim. the eponymous film premieres on tue - jun 15 [8pm] at lloyd hotel and is a very personal documentation of the city’s beauty, pain and reality, environmental abuse and the ugly side of civilization. the film features 8 personal stories by friends and relatives, told at work, during holidays and at special happenings in the city. location: oostelijke handelskade 34 [oostelijk havengebied].
teaching local retailers a thing or two on how to innovate and continue to entice shoppers, the boys of tenue de nîmes have embarked upon yet a new project with san francisco-based denim label tellason. together they’ve concocted an extremely limited-edition jeans trophy [24 hand-numbered pairs only], made from white oak selvedge denim and marked with a specially designed leather tag on the back. the product retails for eur 199.90 and is available only at the tenue de nîmes store. location: elandsgracht 60 [centrum].
wanna know what amsterdam is r-e-a-l-l-y like? it’s wittily illustrated [and that's literally] in toby morris‘ book alledaags. the wieden+kennedy creative and new zealand transplant started a daily sketchbook diary last year, documenting his life and observations of his adopted city. the alledaags publication features a whopping 333 drawings, covering everything from canal boats and queen’s day madness to vondel park picnics and notoriously blunt dutch service.

although officially opening next week, shoppers can already indulge in preppy swedish fashion at velour’s new amsterdam store. housed in a former canal district upholstery workshop, certain elements of the original interior have been retained and fused with contemporary design. the battered bare wall serves as a perfect backdrop for the vintage furniture pieces, and the [faux] cannabis plant adds to the friendly and informal vibe in true amsterdam style.

after having launched spr+, an in-house higher end fashion section, and the spr specials outlet branch, the sprmrkt downtown mothership spawns a full-fledged sister store in the upmarket amsterdam zuid area. dubbed sprmrkt sth [supermarket south], the store measures 260 sqm. and carries a similar edgy range of apparel and accessories but in a totally different retail environment.
designed by doepel strijkers architects, the interior design is inspired by human skin and boasts walls and objects enveloped by a skin-like stretch fabric with cut-outs for storage space and changing rooms, off-set by a pitch-black floor, ceiling, desk and suspended metal clothes racks. a menswear department is to open shortly in the basement section. location: willemsparkweg 168 [zuid].

a new fashion source launched sometime ago in amsterdam’s canal district maze. dubbed kabinet, the store combines the best of vintage designer fashion with edgy contemporary labels and creates a retail ambiance all its own. helmed by veteran vintage collector ferry van der nat, the store mainly stocks womenswear but will gradually expand its sharp range of menswear items which currently includes labels such as sjaak hullekes, pop cph and later this year also jean//phillip.
kabinet’s quirky endeavours are reflected in the shop’s interior. although the size of a dollhouse [albeit an expanding one, as plans are underway to add retail space in the back section and basement], it isn’t short of artsy visual drama by means of a silvery metal-plated floor, stacks of little vintage cabinets and a draped wall. location: herenstraat 13 [centrum].

these are the final days of the future of fashion exhibition at world fashion centre [on until mar 5]. the show celebrates the 10th anniversary of hi-tech print specialist freedom of creation and showcases examples of the company’s achievements in 3d print design. artist victor de bie designed a limited-edition gift box that was produced with the company’s latest 3d print technology. location: koningin wilhelminaplein 13, main hall [west].
ontfront’s shift gear a/w 10 collection features styles for men who love life in the fast lane. inspired by the sleek aesthetics of italian sports cars, the collection has an extensive range of items, varying from tailored uptown chic to playful and sporty.

dutch menswear brand cold method launched its first flagship store in amsterdam’s canal district. a retail extrapolation of the brand’s aesthetics, the shop interior is a fusion of understated contemporary materials and the building’s historic details. originally a dairy, exposed brick walls and tilework are now off-set by concrete, steel, wood and elements of high-gloss black. the store features cold method’s entire menswear collection. location: wolvenstraat 10 [centrum].
the wolf & pack store and gallery is an initiative by new york transplants julian lynn and gabriel hunter. the two became friends in the early 90s, working at the shelter’s legendary club night n.a.s.a. and streetwear emporium liquid sky.
wolf & pack’s primary aim is to work with u.s. brands that have little exposure in europe, exclusively offering amsterdam the products from this rich industry. it stocks brands such as lola, award tour, create build destroy, peg leg and no mas, as well as its very own house brand and an assortment of nike and new era. the gallery shows rotate every two months, collaborating with and exhibiting artists such as the london police, wayne horse, morcky, ticquestar and abner preis.
