after a successful launch last year, the traffic design competition, organised by dubai-based design practice traffic, launches on mon - nov 9 [4pm-6pm] with a launch gathering at the gallery space. themed design as reform, participants are asked to explore ways in which arab culture should preserve authenticity in light of mass production and exportation.
they’ll have to reinterpret the following structures according to certain design disciplines without depriving them of their history, nor reverence for these forms: the mosque through architecture, the majlis through interior design, the mashrabiya through graphic design and a public installation through experimental design.

fashion designer simon de boer takes a stand against fashion consumerism. inspired by buddhist philosophy he disregards the usual constellation of fashion and luxury, and instead creates a concept in which he blends in humanity, self-reflection and humor. his latest project, dubbed holes - a different fashion of fashion is precisely that.
on sun - nov 8 [1pm-9pm / free access] he and seven seamstresses take to the stage of the frascati theatre for this fashion statement. visitors are invited to bring a garment of their choice and have it ‘couturized’ with a hole by the designer and his crew in a specially created stage setting. location: nes 63 [centrum].

parco shibuya is a tokyo retail institution. the ginormous department store celebrates its 40th anniversary this year and commissioned a very special christmas tree installation and corresponding exhibition from visual artist masaru ozaki. the christmas tree installation, consisting of a 3d projection onto giant cubes stacked into a christmas tree shape, launches mon - nov 9 [7pm] and will be the focal point of the store’s christmas celebrations.

a spectacular must-see exhibition showcasing the work of artist anish kapoor launched some time ago at the royal academy of arts [on until dec 11]. curated by jean de loisy, the show explores the artist’s impressive career to date and showcases a series of new and previously unseen works, as well as highlights such as the monumental work svayambh and shooting in the corner. anish kapoor’s major new sculpture tall tree and the eye is exhibited in the institution’s annenberg courtyard. location: burlington house, piccadilly [mayfair].

after last year’s première, dior launches a second collection of deluxe cell phones next december. the two new o.t.t. models are gold-plated and pvd-coated with sapphire crystals, and will be available at selected dior boutiques across the planet. the zélie with red casing retails for usd 7,900 while the zénaïde costs a mere usd 13,400. we’re guessing the brand’s moscow and dubai stores to be generating the highest sales figures.
rebelling against the high shop rents keeping emerging designers out of london’s boutiques, designer karolin maier-hauff found inspiration in a phenomenon that was emblematic of her native berlin for many decades: squatting. in her new concept store in south belgravia, aptly named squatters, new fashion talent is invited to ’squat’ for periods of one to six months. the first series designers to do so include alice palmer, pepper and pistol, borba margo, louise armstrup and olanic. squatters opens on nov 5 [7pm-11pm - invite only!]. location: 45 pimlico road [belgravia].
