urban cartography is now available for mobile global shopping experts. finally!. who ever said making map based apps was a no brainer? well it’s not!. after exploring endless options and variations we think we have come up with a pretty tidy mobile version of our popular PDF city superguides. first city off the rank - tokyo.

whereas our PDFs are pure old-skool print-out fold-up origami, the app version takes it completely next level. maps are all GPS driven and as much as possible we have tweaked the pins to the front doormat. even better, when you are traveling you do not need data roaming for the GPS to work. [unlike all them nasty google map apps]. we can now show stores within department stores [very handy in asian megacities], and you can filter out all the mens or womens only related stores. day and night maps make much more sense. eliminate screen flare in the sunshine, or go discreet dark and mysterious when out on the town.

with over 450 tightly edited reviews of selected establishments and the ability to create your own itineraries, this app will satisfy the needs of the most seasoned superjetsetter. if all goes according to plan [which it never does] more cities will roll out over the months ahead!

superchat beirut: dalila barkache

beirut is making headlines once again. the city has bounced back, ridding itself from gloomy, if not dark connotations while adding new superlatives that even inspired the new york times to declare it the top travel destination of 2009. superfuture was in town earlier this year, checking out the obvious sights and glitzy places, but also attempted to dig a little deeper and see what else is there.

this superchat with jewellery designer dalila barkache has been long overdue, but here it finally is! we first came across the beiruti creative when she collaborated with comme des garçons to open one of the brand’s iconic guerilla stores in beirut back in 2007. moroccan-born and raised in france, she decided to settle here when she fell in love with the city during a chance visit.

you introduced the comme des garçons guerilla store in lebanon. how did that venture come about?
well, i knew about the brand and the guerilla store and liked it. i simply thought it would be a great concept to introduce to beirut. i just contacted comme des garçons and they were also excited to see one of their guerilla stores open up here. ofcourse i had done a little research before and knew it would be a good initiative. i set up the shop with my business partner and fellow jewellery designer selim mouzannar.

how did local shoppers respond to the store?
it was a great success. many who came by were already familiar with the comme des garcons because a few stores, like the if boutique stocked the brand. and also, because i had worked at selim mouzannar’s jewellery boutique as a designer, a lot of his customers also came to the store. additionally, it attracted quite a few shoppers from other countries like kuwait and saudi arabia. although we featured men’s and women’s apparel, it were the accessories and perfumes that were most in demand.

what have you been doing after the guerilla store closed?
i’ve been designing jewellery but i’ve also worked as a consultant for a other jewellery business here in town. by the way, i’m about to launch my new jewellery collection. next to designing i also work as a fashion stylist and i’ve also organized dance parties in cool spots such as the usually women-only ajram beach.

what do you think of the current influx of luxury brands into beirut?
well, the lebanese are very trend-conscious. they’re a vivacious bunch who love their food, fashion and good times, and they love to spend! it’s only logical that these brands come to town, especially now that the circumstances are right.

is this city a good place to settle for a designer or artist?
yes, i think it’s the perfect city to do so as it offers a good environment. first of all, it’s very easy to set up a business here. there’s a good education system and beirut is a good place from where to organize the marketing of whatever your business or craft is. additionally, the quality of life here is simply amazing.

where do you shop or hang out in?
the bourj hammoud area is a big fav of mine. it’s an armenian neighbourhood with lots of jewellery shops. i go there for fun or for business because many of the businesses i do consulting for, are located here. as for fashion, there are a few directional stores you shouldn’t miss: plum, boutique 1, one of the if boutiques or the store of designer rabih kairouz. if you’re interested in design, you should definitely check out bokja and artisans du liban. for eating out there are many good restaurants to choose from but i usually recommend places like centrale for international cuisine or varouj for delicious and spicy armenian food.

and what about places outside beirut?
i like tripoli a lot, it’s a beautiful city in the north of lebanon. or tangiers in morocco. generally, i like smaller cities which have a human scale, where everything is within a walking distance. places with a personal atmosphere and where you can eat well!

pssst…heard of ln-cc yet? short for late night chameleon café, this new and continuously evolving retail formula that’s to open in east london next month is currently strictly under wraps but here’s a few pointers. set up by two veterans of london’s directional retail and clubbing scene, it aims to present a next-generation shopping experience by blending sharply-curated music, art and books, presented in separate areas, into the fashion formula.

okay, okay…the brands? well, these include some hot and rare labels: nonnative, christian peau, new power studio for men, and preen, tze goh and mawi for women. how about that? interestingly, ln-cc is also to feature a vintage high-fidelity sound system and its book section will provide specialized publications hardly found elsewhere. although the store hasn’t opened yet, you can already check it out online.

independent and savvy, the populo store has long time been a popular hang-out for jakarta hipsters. the shop relocated to homey new premises in the neighbourhood earlier this month, assuring its kebayoran baru area fanbase easy access in this traffic-clogged megalopolis. the new store measures 300 sqm. spread over two floors and features a contemporary mix of d.i.y.-chic furniture + displays, some balinese pieces and striking sculptures of local urban art hero darbotz. mind you, the store also has a sunny outdoor terrace and pool!

unveiled by taschen earlier this year at art basel, it’s one of the most peculiar product launches of the year. we’re talking the lunar rock edition by marc newson of norman mailer’s book moonfire. designed by the inimitable marc newson, this is a true collector’s item as only 12 copies have been released, symbolically numbered 1958 to 1969.

the design concept is inspired by the apollo 11 lm and each book is contained in an lm-inspired case which surface is an actual 3d topography of the moon, made from a single piece of aluminium [523 x 596 x 347 mm, 22kg]. amazingly, the item comes with a separately packaged piece of lunar rock and a plexiglass-framed print, signed by legendary moon man buzz aldrin. price is available upon request.

it looks like hong kong is becoming a second tokyo in terms of the availability of japanese brands. more and more hot labels from the land of the rising sun arrive in the city, even getting their branded retail space. the latest addition to the vast array of shops here is understated menswear brand soph.. with 446 sq.ft. the store is compact in size but that is fully compensated with a maximum of sleek aesthetics. white walls and ceiling, and a teak floor provide a minimalist visual frame.

two lines of subtle cove lighting enhance the retail environment. an L-shaped mirror pairs with wooden wall tiles in different shapes to match the tatamis customized from okinawa, to evoke an authentic japanese ambience. this is soph.’s first overseas store and design guru hiroshi fujiwara flew into town for the opening party where he took to the stage for a gig. location: 26 wyndham street [central].

serpentine gallery has pulled it off again, this year presenting a striking pavilion by french starchitect jean nouvel. interestingly, it’s his first completed building in britain. the structure consists of geometric forms made from both metal and light-weight materials and allows a highly versatile use of interior and exterior spaces. its most striking feature is a sloped freestanding wall that stands 12 meters above the lawn. the pavilion will be used a public space, a café and for the gallery’s park nights program, and will remain open until oct 17. location: kensington gardens, hyde park [kensington].

it may look rather inconspicuous on the outside, but behind the concrete façade there’s a cutting-edge boutique hotel that is the waterhouse at south bund. the newly opened property features only 19 rooms, impeccably designed by shanghai-based agency neri & hu. the non-descript utilitarian vibe of the original building has been transformed into a style statement that combines edgy with luxury. the hotel‟s playful design philosophy is based on the blurring of internal and external spaces. as a result public places allow glimpses into private rooms while the private spaces invite guests to peek into public areas.

the waterhouse at south bund features a restaurant, named table no. 1 and manned by an acclaimed chef. there’s a rooftop bar with absolutely stunning cross-river views of the booming pudong district, and as a special service guests can rent vintage scooters for easy urban explorations. a second building located adjacent to the hotel accommodates an events warehouse. measuring 743 sqm., the multi-functional space has a double-storey ceiling and is adaptable to almost any event. location: 1-3 maojiayuan lu [huangpu].

the gansevoort hotel helped to accelerate the meatpacking district’s transformation from fringe to happening hood when it opened six years ago. the arrival of the gansevoort park avenue may do the very same for the nomad area. the new 249-room property will soft open on mon - aug 16 with the official opening scheduled for next october. the hotel is a totally new structure and designed as an urban resort. rooms and suites are spacious, and many feature floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies that give guests unobstructed views of new york’s iconic empire state building.

we love our easy-breezy lifestyles filled with fashion, cool sneakers, gadgets and all the other must-have trophies but when it comes to the world we live in, we don’t care as much. did you know that the pacific ocean is polluted with the largest floating garbage islands in the world? some are several times the size of the state of texas. yet on land, we struggle to get hold of enough recycled plastics to meet the demand for sustainable vacuum cleaners. with its vac from the sea program, home appliances manufacturer electrolux intends to gather plastic garbage from the world’s oceans and turn it into a number of vacuum cleaners. the company aims to increase the production of sustainable vacs to 100% from the current 70%.

transcending their trade out of a passion for dutch fashion, trend consultants kirsten van dam and sam colijn launched ooo originals earlier this year. the website was set up to support, showcase and last but not least sell the creations of holland’s newest generation of fashion designers. ‘dutch innovation and expertise is celebrated worldwide’, says kristen. ‘but fashion design in the netherlands attracts less attention, despite the fact that it originates from the very same design background as contemporary rotterdam architecture or philips technology’.

the aim of the dutch duo is to address this imbalance and raise the international profile of dutch fashion. designers currently stocked on ooo originals online store include mada van gaans, claes iversen, individuals, and beyond and mattijs.

currently on view at 18th street art center is martin durazo’s art project pain management 100. this three-month laboratory aims to investigate and expose the connection between the illegal drug trade economy and the ‘legal’ pharmaceutical drug economy. interestingly, the installation arouses the sensation of the rave and drug culture and challenge society’s desensitized attitude toward the drug phenomenon by inspiring dialogue among the public on a local, national and global level [on until sep 24]. location: 1639 18th street [santa monica].

hong kong: gareth pugh store opening

he may be paris-based but fashion darling gareth pugh’s very first store has opened halfway across the planet in the bustling shopping destination of hong kong. a collab venture with edgy retail giant i.t, the new store is located on ice street in central where it already operates a string of designer fashion depositories, including comme des garçons‘ much publicized subterranean flagship and martin margiela.

the retail space measures 685 sq.ft. and being the obvious brand statement, it reflects much of gareth pugh’s dark yet futuristic fashion sense. it’s a massive manifestation of black affair: walls are clad in black rubber paint while displays are matte black. the scarce contrast is striking and comes either in the form of glossy tiles that create a ‘grid-line’ effect, the glass-plated ceiling or the gigantic led wall showcasing graphics and images related to the brand. the designer flew into town for the opening and mingled with a crowd of overexcited fashionistas. location: 10 ice house street [central].

it’s hard to believe but for its s/s 2011 women’s collection the house of dagmar took its inspiration from rio de janeiro’s many favelas. the pieces are a jolly mix of structured and more flowing, layered designs, spruced up with exotic prints that deliver the expected samba vibe. shown below are three looks we particularly like.
