superfuture : tokyo superguide iphone app

friday, september 3rd, 2010

urban cartography is now available for mobile global shopping experts. finally!. who ever said making map based apps was a no brainer? well it’s not!. after exploring endless options and variations we think we have come up with a pretty tidy mobile version of our popular PDF city superguides. first city off the rank - tokyo.

whereas our PDFs are pure old-skool print-out fold-up origami, the app version takes it completely next level. maps are all GPS driven and as much as possible we have tweaked the pins to the front doormat. even better, when you are traveling you do not need data roaming for the GPS to work. [unlike all them nasty google map apps]. we can now show stores within department stores [very handy in asian megacities], and you can filter out all the mens or womens only related stores. day and night maps make much more sense. eliminate screen flare in the sunshine, or go discreet dark and mysterious when out on the town.

with over 450 tightly edited reviews of selected establishments and the ability to create your own itineraries, this app will satisfy the needs of the most seasoned superjetsetter. if all goes according to plan [which it never does] more cities will roll out over the months ahead!

available now on the App Store

superfuture 4.0 : week 1 : superbug status

sunday, december 7th, 2008

first 7 days…
/

rearranging 1 gigabyte of data was never going to be fun…

here’s the latest bug status summary
/

front page
1. aaaargh. that ‘new reviews’ list is not new! more like 2001 ;-( … the latest reviews are not yet logging.
[FIXED]

/

supertravel
1. offline reviews are still appearing in the review summary lists.
2. still a few glitches in the supertravel navigation. for some reason all roads seem to lead to sweden. hmm?
3. front page featured image is not matching text description… in case you were wondering…
4. our image uploader for shops is not quite in service. once it is, we’ll be adding 100s of shop images.
5. some of the googlemaps are not displaying.
6. plus plenty of other minor thangs..

/

supernews
1. authors names missing on posts etc…

/

supertalk / supercontrol
1. way too many functionality bugs to list but they are systematically getting sorted out one by one. we understand and appreciate that the patience of an average supertalk users is 0.01 seconds so it’s not surprising many users are rioting. we are also supertalk users and finding this just as annoying and frustrating as everyone else. we know what the issues are [thanks to everyone pointing them out a dozen times in a dozen threads] and just need to work through them. should be largely worked out over the next week. the site was working properly before the switch to new server but the IP change messed up a lot of the links and unfortunately almost all the custom settings returned to default mode.

/

2. as for the design issues… yep. design and usability needs to be tweaked for sure. we knew that before we launched but unfortunately the launch deadline beat the programming schedule… so we are playing catchup. it also didn’t help that our entire reviews database was being constantly hacked over the last few months so this had made the need to make the changeover faster than we really wanted to. despite what people seem to think!?, superfuture is no google or myspace. our technical department doesn’t have 100 people working in it. people have suggested we should have had endless testing sessions, set up mirror servers and so on… but on our budget this just wasn’t realistic or even technically possible. we did make the disclaimer that this is a beta version…[3.9] and to expect bugs…
/

3. the single biggest issue in all the feedback has been the addition of the left hand column which conforms to the template of the overall superfuture site. we have been aware of this issue and have an alternative interface option planned…

/

4. as to the question about why move from supertalk 3.0 to 4.0 when 3.0 was working fine…? sure. there was nothing wrong with 3.0. the issue was more about the long term development and management of the entire website. we were spending so much time and money running different servers in multiple locations, running multiple ad servers, having to compile multiple stats reports, having to login to multiple admin systems, etc. it was always quite obvious that sooner rather than later this all desperately needed to be consolidated into one location and the website content consolidated on one database. obviously this was going to cause a few unwelcome consequences - but on the upside, having all this content consolidated has turned the superfuture database into a formidable entity for future development. there are very few websites - in fact NONE- that have a messageboard seemlessly linked to a geocoded map system, blog and shopping engine… if we had kept supertalk 3.0 maybe it would have eventually rotted away. supertalk 4.0 might rot away too given the backlash of the past week! but i think once the bugs get sorted and the added functionality get implemented then supertalk 4.0 will be worth the short-term cyberpain.

/

maybe i’m wrong, but at this point there’s no going back!

/

apologies for the hassle, thanks for your feedback, and thanks for your patience.

superfuture 4.0 is live !

monday, december 1st, 2008

well almost…
after all… who really would expect this to go off according to the superplan?
let’s just call it superfuture 3.9 till christmas before getting too excited… because there are still a few glitches to fix, pixels to align, reviews to ID, and new servers to test out… in fact, i can’t even figure out how to insert a line break in this giant slab of blurb… but you should get the general idea.
yep/
since 1999 when we launched superfuture as a predominantly map and urban travel website we have had 3 major upgrades [or was it 4?] though since 2003 rather than upgrade the website we really just added new sections to the site - like supertalk - and supernews - which developed independently - both technically and in terms of audience. in fact, the website has operated on different databases and so effectively operated as a series of different websites. in addition, supertalk operated fully web 2.0 compatible while the travel site was still a web 1.0 antique. the plan has always been to consolidate the lot together into a rather monumental site which combines our supermaps with geocoded maps, ramps up the shop reviews and travel site and combines this with our 32,000 plus member supertalk community, adds a turbocharged news blog, and then give everyone their own shop… sounds impossible… yes. anyway we have [almost] done it… and it has only taken 5 years!! superfuture has always been a work in progress and so we will keep updating things as we go… we have much more functionality ready to implement but just need to do it slowly… so don’t expect perfection just yet - but we expect to reach that point sometime in early 2009.
/
so with that said we need to warn you… there are a few bugs and so rather than having 1000 people email us the same thing we will list the known bugs here:
otherwise if you want to tell us something you have found please email to: bugs [at] superfuture.com
/
supertravel
ok, so the reviews are a slight mess. chaos reigns. best not to even look till 2009 we think… : )
1. most review descriptions still have spam tacked to end of the descriptions due to that hack attack in july. we are systematically having to go through reviews one by one to clean up. uuuuRK.
2. we are launching with 13 cities. we have 200 plus more and will add them as they are cleaned up. 13 is more than a headache enough for us at this point.
3. the 13 cities have some areas that are a bit messed up. ie. we have so many city areas called downtown, central, centrum, city, city center, soho, etc that the database has got a bit confused… so if you have happen to be looking for prada in soho new york and end up at shanghai tang in soho hong kong you will understand the issue.
4. the text for ‘interior’ descriptions has been cut off.
5. review dates are not yet functioning
/
supernews
1. missing post authors
2. the news items from 2003 till 07.2008 can be found under ‘archive’. these reviews are uncategorized.
/
supertalk
1. should be largely working according to plan!
[UPDATE DECEMBER 02 11pm - SUPERTALK STILL A BIT STUFFED... we are working on it] all the BUGS listed on superofficial. all the love and affection should be easy enough to find everywhere else ;-( EEEK. it makes entertaining reading all the same.
/
supershop
1. having issues with multiple purchases. ie. if you want to purchase both a tokyo and shanghai superguide you need to purchase separately.
/
supercontrol
1. you can only access supercontrol if you are an existing member of supertalk or a join as a new member.
