the minneapolis show just launched at peres projects [on until aug 29]. the show’s focus is minneapolis, a city in the midwestern united states, known for its high rate of literacy and racially tolerant atmosphere. in many respects it is the ideal american city, where coexisting cultures thrive, and in turn breed successive generations of even more creative, talented inhabitants.
the show considers the implications of this city, its legacy and impact on everyone who has never been there. participating artists include amie dicke, bruce labruce and mark titchner. location: 2766 south la cienega boulevard [culver junction].

the jeff koons: popeye series exhibition opened at the serpentine gallery [on until sep 13]. on display are paintings and sculptures from jeff koons‘ popeye series which he began in 2002, and showcases his signature ideas and motifs, including surreal combinations of everyday objects, cartoon imagery, art-historical references and children’s toys. location: kensington gardens [kensington].

new york city’s hospitality scene has a bright new star: the swanky cooper square hotel. designed by architect carlos zapata, the 21-story glass tower features 145 rooms, suites and studios plus one spectacular rooftop penthouse with a wrap-around 1,600 sq.ft. terrace.
interiorwise it’s a meticulously crafted fusion of timeless european elegance with modern comfort for both the rooms and public spaces. mind you, b&b italia furnishings are found throughout the property. the lavishness even extends outdoors to the very designy backyard garden and dining patio.

the laid-back café, a fav place for young moscow hipsters to meet and party, has been around for a while but the mesto shop section was only recently launched and stocks vintage clothing and a well-edited selection of cool local labels mixed with euro street brands, including humör, pharmacy industry and revolution clothing. location: petroverigskiy pereulok 3 [kitay gorod].

tokyo: opening ceremony
fashion-mad tokyo shoppers jumped for joy when new york’s opening ceremony announced its arrival in the japanese capital earlier this year, making available their savvy and well-edited collections. for this overseas expansion it teams up with local retailer onward kashiyama and the first collab venture will be an opening ceremony shop-in-shop at the seibu movida department store, opening there on sun - aug 30.
measuring a pretty grand 2,300 sqm., the new tokyo outpost will feature a wide range of foreign brands, including acne, band of outsiders, alexander wang plus selected items from its own collection, including the coveted designs by indie actress chloe sévigny. shop location: seibu movida building, 7th floor, 21-1 udagawa-cho [shibuya].

francisco van benthum just showed his s/s 10 collection. dubbed solitude, the designs are based on ‘old school’ couture principles but incorporate contemporary elements such as transparent fabrics, layering and half-construction tweaks that give it an advanced look.

berlin: michelberger hotel
for quite sometime now berlin has been one of europe’s leading creative hotbeds. no wonder an edgy hospitality concept like the michelberger hotel was conceived here. located in a landmark industrial building in east berlin, the hotel fuses edgy low-cost design with modern comfort and in such a way, it’s like staying at your best friend’s stylish downtown pad.
decorationwise, the property is a carefully curated affair, mixing recycled furniture and objects with new design elements. michelberger hotel’s rooms are playfully referred to by their size: 33m3, 55m3 and 88m3. additionally there’s the luxus, a spacious suite with increased comfort, and the big one, a room big enough to accomodate a whole group of guests. location: warschauerstrasse 39-40 [friedrichshain].

it’s quite amazing how the swarovksi brand continuously manages to come up with eye-catching projects and collabs. it has extended its collaboration with brit designer giles deacon for its atelier swarovksi jewellery line and the a/w 09 collection features hot ‘n hybrid pieces containing materials and objects as diverse as felt, pins, studs and, obviously, crystals. shown below is a design we particularly like. atelier swarovksi is available at selected stores across the planet, including henri bendel [new york], maria luisa [paris] and space mue [seoul].
