NYC
sat sept 26 - n-type @ santo's
mon sept 28 - mala & francois k @ cielo
wed sept 30 - the slew (kid koala, dynomite d & ex-wolfmother rhythm section) @ music hall of w'burg
SF
sat 3 oct - mrk1, 6blocc, borgore, ultrablack, babylon system @ somewhere in the east bay (may hit this up)
fri oct 9 - joe nice @ the darkroom at club six (maybe)
i'm definitely heading to the slew in NYC, and will probably hit up mala and n-type too. as for the SF shows, will see how me and the little lady are travelling.
i'm way outta the loop with new tunes lately - work, band, HD crashing and life have all got in the way. recommend me some fresh shit, be it nasty, deep, techy, wonky or otherwise...!

I had a listen through some of the tracks from 5.5 on boomkat and it seems like the vanguard of dubstep is getting a bit too full off their own progressive wankery. This is just my opinion.
I could see this coming when they started releasing brainfeeder collabs with kode9/martyn every other week. Some were pretty good but most were boring and wet dreams for the wankers who just stand still at shows all night pretending to be swayed by the bass.
the reason why their flagship artist (burial) had such wide appeal was because of the emotion conveyed through his music, something that i have to say most of the other releases (with a few exceptions like zomby and darkstar) on hyperdub lack.

OMG new Shackleton!
edit -
Nearly a year on from the scattering of the Skull Disco ashes, Shackleton returns with a brilliant nine track LP on the ever pioneering Perlon label. 3EPs represents a significant statement from the Bristol flag bearer, after a move to electronic mecca Berlin. Quietly developing over the last nine months through mixes of Moderat and Ricardo Villalobos, the unmistakable Shackleton sound - smatterings of Darbuka drums, deep droning bass tones - has been honed into a sharp and direct proclamation of pastures new.

I don't know how many of you have been following Rustie but I think he's been doing some pretty decent work - one I had from back in 2008 has been getting a ton of play recent for whatever reason: black block rustie remix - modeselektor (http://wuzzthebruzz.blogspot.com/2008/11/modeselektor-black-block-rustie-remix.html). no, its the rustie remix/mu5h pressing from 2008. Its not super-rare but its not that easy to find either. hyperdub re-released it in 2009.
the original as far as i know never got released apart from on a compilation, there was one with starkey and sukh knight remixes but thats pretty much impossible to find.

i stand corrected.
to be honest the only mix i ever even liked of that song was the rustie one. If i came across the original in a store i'd probably cop it tho just 'cause.
its weird that the liquid dancehall/strange fruit single sounds a lot more like how rustie made his remix of spliff dub sound than zomby's original, which was more stripped down.
most of these dubstep producers have day jobs, internet hype would make it seem otherwise.

if he's reading this he should do a q&a for us
q: when do you think the dubstep tent is gonna collapse
because while my favorite thing about dubstep is the incredibly forward-thinking community it's created (it's like moore's law applied to a music scene) there's definitely a limited amount of time the continually diverging subgenres can remain cohesive
seems like there's four main pillars these days:
- brostep (www.brostepforum.com)
- deep dubstep
- ragga dubstep
- whatever what hyperdub puts out is called (zomby goes here)
trying to classify the almost "ambient garage" of hyperdub with the wobble bass bros is an exercise in futility that can only be kept up for so long
yeh good read, thanks for the link dubz. i've read it elsewhere too - i can't believe how many tunes zomby makes.
i'm kind of obsessed with his style/approach since its a lot like how a visual artist works. Where Were U was like a sketchbook... quick unfinished gestures, repeated, but so raw. and nothing really has to make sense.
^ i don't think zomby knows or seems concerned. part of the fun is probably not knowing where it's all going and just doing your thing.
Magnetic

it's wankery to generalise hyperdub's discog asambient garage
wankery.
I also don't see why there's such compulsion for the categorisation of music, the best stuff is often an amalgamation of various influences (it seems to me anyway). if eventually an offshoot from under the dubstep/bro/wonky/funky umbrella veers into completely unrecognisable/new territory - then good! I look forward to it.

agreed, that's why it was in quotes bro.
and while i personally agree with your second point, it's immaterial - there clearly is such a compulsion for categorization. music creates communities of listeners based on some degree of shared aesthetics and philosophy, and artists working within those communities often share the same audience.
when there's an aesthetic and philosophical divide as deep as the one developing in dubstep, it's destructive to that community - particularly if one starts to overpower the other and dominates the "genre brand".
here's a direct parallel: the development of jump-up dnb earlier this decade, which completely overwhelmed and nearly killed the dnb "scene". dnb still isn't fully recovered, and it's going to be afflicted by the stigma of "car commercial / videogame music" for an indefinite future.
i'd hate for dubstep to become "wobble bass music that girls don't dance to" in 5 years time.
Magnetic
12-19-09, 04:11 AM
dubstep is already called 'wobbly bass music' and we all know girls don't dance to it.
but honestly, who gives a toss? why are we already talking about dubstep's legacy? I don't think it's anywhere near the mainstream for now, let alone car ads.
you actually said it yourself, 'there's definitely a limited amount of time the continually diverging subgenres can remain cohesive' - it's inevitable, relax and ride the wave (or use your own corny phrase)

fuck labelling music, just listen to it and enjoy it. soon we're gonna have psudo-ambient-wobble-garage raves or some shit.
hyperdub released all kinds of shit, it has its own sound for sure but do you call king midas sound, zomby, kode9 ambient garage?
only reason i like labeling music is because it helps me figure out what i like / find more similar artists. if something isn't dubstep well then it it simply just fits into another category of music and that's fine.
i don't think the genre-ization of music can kill a scene, it's got to be about the music that's coming out of it.

dubstep is already called 'wobbly bass music' and we all know girls don't dance to it.
haha, i went to the weekly dubstep party in brixton a year ago and some chicks were giving it a go...
this microgenre thing is one that's been with dance music since as long as i can remember, it seems to be a byproduct of its attendant social aspects (being a scene / primarily consumed in clubs where trends come and go). being this microgenre at that club means you aren't a loser like that microgenre at this club etc. it's exactly why you could find similarish records at uptown vs blackmarket but they probably didn't think too much of each other.
anyway we all know two-step killed drum n bass, not jump up (which i think is jungle rather than dnb, or at best dnb that aspired to be ragga jungle, etc, etc)

rusko is the david guetta of dubstep.
right? hate to be that dude but the hype kills it. blahhh, we don't get much action here so i'll deal w/it. tons of corny broads to fuck with at least.

i've been hearing that la roux remix through the floorboards at my house for like 4 months straight. and the people upstairs are mos definitely douchebags. like (most) rusko, piss me off... decided to pick up a good sub and rattle some real shit through the foundations...
ahah - any of you toronto cats gonna catch rusko w/ krazy baldhead? no thanks...

hard tune to find, had to rip and up it myself. worth it though because it's quite good:

burial's 2 albums
apart from that most full fledged dubstep lp's haven't been anything great. its all about compilations, ep's and 12"s
try steppa's delight vol 1+2 for the essentials
and box of dub vol 1+2

i applaud your producing skills, i'm not so sure i'd call it dubstep though.
its kinda like wobble-dubstep, but theres far too much going on in the track.
these are my 2 cents, as i said good job for producing it and keep at it.

What would you call it? There is a lot of percussion, but if you listen closely it's mostly dubstep-type patterns, but as usual the track develops a mind of its own so I guess the dubstepness got lost in translation.
